One more event on Environment was organized by Department of Physics in our college on 20th January 2023. Resource Person is Professor K.Ramgopal, S.K.University. He talked on "Climate Change & Global warming. Gist of the programme is
Climate change is the major culprit that causes global warming. Unusual increase in temperature is called global warming and as this is caused by the emission of green house gases, this is also called green house effect. Carbon dioxide and methane are the major green house gases. Carbon dioxide is emitted by the burning of fossil fuels, whereas methane is emitted by paddy fields. Due to global warming, polar ice caps and Himalayan glaciers melt down. This increases the sea level and as a result coastal areas are flooded and non-coastal areas suffer from drought. Due to built up of high pressure areas especially in Rayalaseema zone, monsoons often fail. This makes Anantapur district a semi arid zone. Desertification has already set in this district.
Aerosol pollution is another major threat. These are suspended particulate matter that often meddle with the formation of clouds. Formation of smog and PAN is due to aerosol pollution. Burning of fossil fuels and wood may generate carbon products like black carbon. Volcanic eruptions release sulfur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide pollution results in acid rains. Oil refineries in and around Mathura emit greater bulk of sulfur dioxide and this results in the corrosion of the Love monument 'Taj Mahal'. Anthropogenic activities are the source of pollution.
Deforestation aggravates the ill effects of pollution. Forest fire devastates the forest ecosystem. All the ecosystems like deserts, forests and Himalayan mountains are to be preserved for their uniqueness.
There is much cold rush in Arctic area. Ice caps are melting at rapid speed. This may result in the depletion of fresh water resources in future. Future wars may be fought for water not for oil.
Amazon forests are cleared for Soyabean cultivation. These forests are called lungs of our planet. Indiscriminate rush to create wealth is the main cause of pollution.
Tropospheric ozone is harmful whereas stratospheric ozone is useful. Ozone hole is caused by the emission of chloro fluoro carbons. Ozone umbrella of stratosphere screens the earth from excess UV light radiation.
Professor Ramgopal concluded "My dear students, Planet Earth has suddenly become sick and it urgently needs a cure. Plant a tree and plan your future. If you spoil the earth, you do not find another one in our solar family. Be good guest to this planet".
